Guelph CVP featured in the Guelph Tribune
From the Guelph Tribune: Crime prevention is a task for community members, not just Guelph Police Services. At least, that is the philosophy behind the Guelph Community Volunteer Patrol, an organization that has been helping police to keep neighbourhoods safe for more than 10 years in Guelph. Welcome to the Guelph Community Volunteer Patrol's new internet home. |
What is the "Community Volunteer Patrol"? The Community Volunteer Patrol is a joint effort between the Guelph Police Service and Community members like YOU who are concerned about the security of their communities. The "C.V.P." was created on the understanding that community safety and security are not the sole responsibility of the Police, but rather a shared responsibility between the Police and the citizens of our fine city. This program involves teams of Community Volunteers, under the direct supervision of C.V.P. Coordinators and the Guelph Police Service. Trained Volunteers "patrol" a designated area of the city and act as "an extra set of eyes and ears for the Guelph Police Service." It is the intention of the organisers that this active joint effort in crime prevention will enhance and improve the quality of life in our city. What are our objectives? There are three main objectives of the Community Volunteer Patrol.
The primary objective is to help reduce crime through deterrence and active prevention
The second, if an incident does occur, the C.V.P. will assist the Guelph Police Service by providing the attending police officer with an information advantage that can be continually updated.
Finally, by allowing Community Volunteers the opportunity to actively participate in crime prevention in and around their own neighbourhoods, the C.V.P. will increase cooperation and understanding between Police Officers and the citizens they serve. Are our volunteers put in danger? DEFINITELY NOT! The key design of the C.V.P. was set out to treat the safety of our volunteers as PRIORITY #1! During training, volunteers are thoroughly instructed on what and what not to do. Every volunteer must abide by the strict RULES OF CONDUCT set forth by the organisers to ensure the safety and security of the Volunteers and of the program.
Teams will NEVER go out on a patrol with less than two members in a vehicle.
While on a patrol, the members never approach an incident, accident, suspect, or an occurrence unless directed to do so by the Guelph Police Service.
While on patrol, the members NEVER leave their vehicle.
The Community Volunteer Patrol will act STRICTLY AS AN EXTRA SET OF EYES AND EARS for the Guelph Police Service
